100+ Downloads, What Inspired The Game of Fourtune?
Good Day,
The Game of Fourtune has reached more than 100 downloads! It's been quite the journey and I feel extremely proud to hit this benchmark! I'd like to thank everyone that's given feedback, criticism, and support over the past few months during the game's development and I hope to continue to provide interesting updates for the game in the coming months as well! I'd say I'm about 75% done with writing out the next route so hopefully I'll be able to show it off in the near future!
In the meantime let's talk about something that I've wanted to chat about for a while now. The primary influence and inspiration for The Game of Fourtune.
I'd say that at first glance The Game of Fourtune might give the impression that it was inspired by Danganronpa or the Zero Escape series because I think those are the easy references that people go-to when it comes to death games. However, the main inspirations for the game came from three particular pieces of media. Alice In Borderland, Kaiji, and... Mario Party.
Yes Mario Party, once you realize that a lot of the games' rules and theming make a bit more sense with the obsession with four. The game types are essentially the party game types from Mario Party. I think that I also try and employ the chaos that you get sometimes from those games and the split-second decisions to screw over someone. Anyway mechanically a lot of the game is just inspired by Mario Party because it gives me a lot of ways to play around with what kind of situations happen in the game. Whether the protagonist is teamed up, going solo, or perhaps trying to find a way where everyone can win. Just like in Mario Party!
Kaiji and Alice in the Borderland work as the primary inspiration for various death games that happen within the game itself as well as for some motivational reasons and character inspirations that we'll go for later. But suffice to say that when I was writing up scenarios for the game as well as some of the first few routes I binged watched Kaiji and read through all of Alice in the Borderland. Since one of the game's main draws is the various types of games I had to look around for some inspiration for thrilling and entertaining games that I could try and work into my own.
Anyway, I can't recommend them enough! They're excellent pieces of media for inspiration that go a lot into game theory on a ton of different game types. I feel like my brain grew ten times after reading and watching both of these. I will probably also check out some other death game and gambling media or will soon. Things like As the Gods Will, Compulsive Gambler Kakegurui. I just can't get enough of it.
Also! I should make a shout-out to Themis' Zodiac Trial. I played that game and it gave me the push I needed to commit myself to make this game. Also, there were some scenarios in that game that inspired me as well but I don't want to spoil anything. If you like The Game of Fourtune I'm certain you'll enjoy that and their new game The Divine Deception which I believe are both out on steam and itch.io I believe.
Anyway, that's all for now!
