Public Demo Out + Character Inspirations & Notes 2: Devon Rhodes

Good Day folks!  Today is a special day as it's the day I've made The Game of Fourtune demo public!  So now no one has to bother going through links or using a password.  Mainly this was to mark that the demo is 'complete' and by complete I really just mean I managed to get 4 routes spruced up enough to show you all.  Of course, I'll still be updating and changes things as I continue along and get feedback, but for the moment you can enjoy what I've got for you now.  And hopefully it gets you excited for more things to come in the future.

As a little treat and also a bit of a celebration for this mile marker I want to talk about The Game of Fourtune's other protagonist.  Devon Rhodes.

Such a charmer

Devon, like Clyde is an unfortunate soul caught up in a game of death that she never intended to be a part of.  And like Clyde must find a way to survive these games by whatever means necessary.

Devon is sarcastic like Clyde but usually in a more friendly and humorous manner than Clyde.  Often her jokes are meant to lighten up the room and make people feel better as opposed to feeling worse about themselves.  She's a character that usually goes with the flow and doesn't stress too much about what's going on around her.

Sad day for Devon

Of course, that's the 'usual' and Devon as a character acts very differently.  Under pressure I'd say that she's a character that folds much easier than Clyde or generally other characters.  I wouldn't say that she has a weak heart, but that she is something that gets very emotional and overwhelmed.  Considering the death games that she's in it's not hard to imagine someone quickly breaking down because of that.  And that's what I enjoy when writing Devon.  Unlike Clyde who tends to hold his own while under stress and breaks down afterwards, Devon is someone who breaks down during a threatening situation and from there has to navigate a deadly game while also managing her stress and emotions.  At least at a greater scale than Clyde would.

Fear and hesitation are normal reactions that Devon constantly has to deal with in these deadly games.

That's not to say that Devon doesn't have her strengths however.  I'd say that she's very empathetic and able to get a better read on people's emotions and feelings than Clyde would and that she's in general more personable and liked overall by others in the cast because she's sympathetic and generally just a nicer person when she's not stressed out to the max.  Plus, sometimes by embracing her own fear and panic she's able to do things most wouldn't expect of her.  In that sense she's got a... final girl thing going on for her.  Maybe she will end up being one, who knows.

Devon herself doesn't really have a main inspiration.  I'm not sure I'd even say that she's a foil to Clyde and more so just another character who I thought would show an interesting perspective to the death games.  I would say that Devon is a more realistic take on what would happen if someone got thrown into a death game without really knowing anything about it.  Constant fear, panic, dread, and exhaustion.  Fighting and clawing her way through pain just to get another chance at life and constantly being frustrated and confused at everything going on around her.  It's a tough experience but one that I think helps the narrative along.

I hope you all enjoy the routes where Devon takes the lead as the protagonist!  She's just another lovely protagonist and one that I think you'll enjoy experiencing the game from.

Until next time, Good Luck and Good Fortune
